Home of Tom Maidens and Bill Horne

This charmingly appointed 1925 home was the home of the Mauclair family from 1950 until Bill and Tom purchased it in 2009. They spent their first ten days in the house painting and making cosmetic changes. Over the years, they've replaced the windows, added a powder room (formerly a coat closet), and expanded the rear cabana (a must-see!). On your way in, be sure to check out the gardens—Bill and Tom did all of the landscaping themselves. "We are passionate hobby gardeners," says Bill.

Bill and Tom are also avid collectors of artwork and furniture, as you'll notice as you tour this creatively decorated home. Their eclectic taste draws from many, many sources—they've found art and furniture at estate sales, in thrift stores, and even on the side of the road. Imaginative repurposing makes their home unique. "We like anything that makes us smile when we look at it," says Bill.

In the plaid-carpeted entryway, check out the French art poster they found at George Romero's moving sale. The1970s high-backed chairs in the living room are a roadside find; the couple simply picked them up and reupholstered them. In the kitchen, they painted the cabinets and added custom cabinetry to enclose the refrigerator. The kitchen island was a Potter Barn display shelf in its former life! Bill's grandmother's dining room chairs are in the breakfast room. Of all the rooms, they believe the dining room best expresses their style.

Bill and Tom feel that their home is the perfect size and vintage to express their whimsical sense of style. They love that they can enjoy all the advantages of city living while still being able to garden and enjoy a beautiful view.
