House Tour - 28 Richey Avenue

Many recognize the front porch of 28 Richey Avenue as the “food zone” of the Annual Block Party, marking this remarkable house as a veritable haven of neighborhood hospitality. But through the wrought iron storm door and intricately detailed beveled glass front door lays a home resplendent with charm and ambiance. Built in the early 20th century, between 1900 and 1910, this stately 2300-square foot, three-bedroom home immediately attracted Dr. William Ferianc with both its innate character and its proximity to his dental office on Perrysville Avenue. In 1964, Dr. Ferianc purchased the home from Della Hack, and has lived and loved in it for over 40 years. Although extensive remodeling work has been done throughout the years, the original beauty of 28 Richey Avenue still shines through. Perhaps the most striking feature is the home’s original woodwork, with at least three different species of wood used to accentuate the floors and appointments throughout.

Upon entering the main living area, the visitor is greeted by a regal baby grand piano in the entrance hallway, and the hall staircase, which boasts original stained glass windows, walnut paneling and walnut spindles. Further into the house, entrance into the dining room is accomplished through a set of pocket doors, original to the house and fully functional. Illumination of the original mahogany woodwork throughout the dining room is provided by the stunning crystal chandelier overhead, which reflects off of the oriental dining set purchased in Japan in 1954.

Directly adjacent to the dining room, the kitchen boasts striking maple woodwork, once painted, but since stripped and restored to reveal its natural beauty. The space where a pantry once was has been remodeled and repurposed to serve as the home’s second full bathroom.

Our tour of the main living area is completed in the cozy living room, which echoes the original woodwork evidenced throughout the rest of the house. The original gas-burning fireplace, framed by its original mantle and tile, fills this charming sitting area with radiating warmth and ambiance, a fitting conclusion to our tour of a home known for its welcoming stature in Observatory Hill.
