Tours of the Observatory

Friday - 8pm (April through November 1)

Reservations are required by calling 412-321-2400

Although the observatory is located in a public park the building is owned and operated by the University of Pittsburgh. The observatory is a private research laboratory and therefore not opened to the public except for the tour program.

Tours begin with a short slide or film presentation followed by a walking tour of the building finally ending up at the 13" Fitz-Clark refractor. If it's a clear night visitors will be able to see whatever celestial objects are within range of the telescope that night. The tours are free of charge but you must have a reservation. To make a reservation call 412-321-2400 between the hours of 1pm and 5pm Monday through Friday. If the tour is not full you can make reservations up to the day of the tour, however no reservations will be accepted after 5pm. Group or individual reservations are acceptable with a maximum group size of 45. There are no age restrictions on the tours but the tour is highly recommended for those over the age of seven.

Public Lecture Series

3rd Friday of Each Month (except December) at 7:30pm
Reservations Required

Allegheny Observatory hosts a public lecture the third Friday of each month except for December. Admission is free, but requires a reservation due to limited seating. For reservations, please call Lou Coban at the Observatory, 412-321-2400.

Lectures begin at 7:30pm; light refreshments will be available beginning at 7pm. A tour of the Observatory will be conducted following the lecture, and if the sky is clear an observing session with the historic 13-inch Fitz-Clark Refractor will follow the tour. Schedule and info on the Observatory's website.

All Sky Camera

Do you know that the Allegheny Observatory, has a sky camera pointing up from the observatory that updates once per minute, starting at 7:15pm and ending at approximately 6:30am. Check it out by clicking here.

Nextdoor: A Social Network for Neighbors

Perhaps you recently read about how neighbors in Fineview used a social sharing app to nab a thief.  Observatory Hill residents have been using this tool as well to share public safety alerts and organize events and communicate with neighbors.  When neighbors start talking, good things happen.  nextdoor.com

  • Build a stronger neighborhood
  • Connect with your neighbors to stay informed and share useful local information. Plan meetups and cleanups.
  • Keep the neighborhood safe
  • Look out for each other and send updates to keep your neighbors informed about safety issues and incidents.
  • Share goods and recommendations
  • Find a great babysitter or trusty dentist. Borrow a ladder or sell that old bookcase.

Volunteer Opportunities in the Community

The Door Campaign, whose mission is to open doors to the diverse Pittsburgh population is establishing an aquaponics studio in the Family Center at Northview Heights, and is partnering with Perry High School to establish a hydroponics curriculum. Focused on low socioeconomic neighborhoods’ the Door Campaign wishes to use the knowledge platform of green initiatives, arts and culture, athletics, education, mentoring, and career development to mobilize these populations toward success.  If you are interested in learning about the organization and its projects and volunteer opportunities, visit their website.

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh
Hundreds of volunteers, from teens to seniors, are critical to the Library. They work in all the locations and perform vital jobs. To learn how you can get in on the action - and the benefits of volunteering at CLP, review their current volunteer opportunities.

New Hazlett Theater has various volunteer opportunities available from front-of-house staffing to administrative duties.  Ushers must be at least 17 years of age, be able to walk up and down stairs, be comfortable standing for long periods of time, and have no fear of heights. Visit www.newhazletttheater.org for more about the theater and its programs and opportunities.

Northside Food Pantry

Staffed by dozens of volunteers and kept going throughout the decades by its dedicated neighbors, the pantry operates on a shoestring annual
operating budget. To date, it has not received government funding for day-to-day operations, but relies instead on cash donations and food drives to keep the shelves stocked. The pantry is open 3 days a week and serves more than 2,000 families on the Northside. There are a variety of ongoing volunteer opportunities, including helping to stock and distribute food, cleaning and preparing the pantry, unloading delivery trucks, and helping with special events.

Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy
Volunteers are critical to healthy, beautiful parks. Every year, thousands of enthusiastic, dedicated volunteers offer their time to care for the parks that they love and enjoy. However you want to participate, from data entry, working on seasonal cleanup days, weekly weeding teams, or serving as an Urban Ecosteward, you can help maintain Riverview Park as the stunning jewel of our neighborhood and city that it is.

Observatory Hill, Inc.
Your neighborhood needs your input, expertise and involvement to make Observatory Hill the best place to live in Pittsburgh.  You can volunteer to serve on an project committee, participate in neighborhood cleanup projects (or start your own), help with special events, organize a block watch, and attend board meetings.

There are many, many more volunteer opportunities in and around Observatory Hill, the greater North Side, and the Pittsburgh region. Check with your favorite nonprofit or community or religious organization to see how you can make your corner of the world a better place. You can also connect with a cause that needs you by searching opportunities on Volunteermatch.org or signing up with PittsburghCares.
