Driving through Observatory Hill one day in 2004, Mark and Christine Smith stopped to see the previous owner of this stone home placing a “For Sale” sign in the front yard. It took 5 minutes for them to call and set up an appointment, which took place immediately. Soon after the tour they became only the third owner of this home constructed in 1935 by a dentist named Frank Barrante. Richard Smyth was the man kind enough to show them the home, which he purchased in 1989, and the Smiths have lovingly cared for it ever since.

Several renovations were made by Dr. Barrante in 1949. The kitchen was renovated, adding Jamestown metal cabinets, and the garage was added. At a time as yet undetermined, the servant staircase was closed in and is now used both for storage and to provide air conditioning to the second floor. Mark and Christine have tiled the upstairs bathroom floor, and had the floor refinished, new countertops added, and the metal cabinets repainted in the kitchen. Additionally they have removed carpeting in the entry way to expose the original white oak flooring.

The house boasts Carrara glass tile in the kitchen and bathrooms, and original white oak flooring in the dining room, kitchen, living room and entry, The Smiths have added many fine pieces of antique furniture, and several sentimental pieces, including a cedar chest owned by Christine’s great grandmother, and a quilt made by her grandmother of showcasing the state flowers of all 48 states (at the time she made the quilt!). Come and enjoy this home and the view into Riverview Park.
